The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
